BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Russia
- Pres. Putin's "partial mobilization" was originally thought to prioritize calling up Russian men aged 18 to 35 and with prior fighting experience, but there are reports of 62-year-olds without prior military experience receiving recruitment notices.
- The draft is scaring eligible Russian men. A man was arrested for shooting at a draft officer trying to enlist him, and there are reports of miles-long traffic jams and a 50-fold inflation in flight prices to leave the country as men of conscription age try to flee before they're called up for service.
- Separately, Russia offered citizenship to Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked U.S. government secrets and has been avoiding justice in Russia. I note that Snowden is of conscription age and has prior military experience (he briefly enlisted in the U.S. Army but quit mid-training).
