BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Ukraine

  • Ukraine lost one of its precious F-16s during Russia's incoming barrage on Monday - but not before the pilot, Oleksiy "Moonfish" Mes, shot down four Russian cruise missiles.
  • A Ukrainian legislator wrote that the F-16 was lost to friendly fire when a U.S.-supplied Patriot surface-to-air defense system mistook it for an enemy missile "due to a lack of coordination between units."
  • However, there's no public evidence to corroborate or reject that theory, and Ukraine's military is still investigating the cause of the crash (but currently calling it "pilot error").
  • The Times estimated that Ukraine still has five more F-16s in action - of the 85 that donor nations committed to sending it.

Israel

  • Israel continued its raids in the West Bank yesterday, killing at least five militants - including a Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander it says was behind attacks on Israeli civilians.
  • On Sunday, the Israeli military will begin a series of three-day daytime pauses in Gaza to allow the UN to distribute 640,000 polio vaccines - first in central Gaza, then in southern Gaza, and finally in northern Gaza.
  • Israeli officials were quick to clarify that this isn't the start of a broader ceasefire - it's solely a one-time vaccination drive.
Iran
  • A new report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) estimated that Iran has added 49.8 lbs (22.6 kg) to its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium - an increase of 16% - since the IAEA's last report in May.
  • That puts Iran's stockpile at 363.1 lbs (164.7 kg) of 60% uranium - theoretically almost enough for four atomic bombs if further enriched to 90% (there are no indications Iran is further enriching - or intends to in the near term).
  • Some had hoped that Iran's new moderate president, Masoud Pezeshkian, would cooperate better with the IAEA and reengage more openly in nuclear diplomacy than his predecessors did, but Pezeshkian may be waiting to see who wins U.S. presidential elections in November to restart nuclear talks.
China
  • Hong Kong convicted two journalists of the now-shuttered Stand News on charges of sedition (read: supporting democracy). They both face up to two years in prison.
Sudan
  • Eastern Sudan is still submerged in flood waters, and ongoing heavy rains have complicated efforts to bring aid to the ~50,000 people affected - or to even assess the impact of the dam's burst.
