BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Ukraine and Russia

  • U.S. officials estimated that almost 500,000 Russians and Ukrainians have died in the 18 months since Russia invaded Ukraine - including up to 300,000 Ukrainian civilians, 120,000 Russian troops, and 70,000 Ukrainian troops. These are wild guesses since Russia undercounts its casualties and Ukraine doesn't release official figures.
  • The Netherlands and Denmark said they will donate F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, becoming the first countries to solidly commit to sending jets. It will still take at least a year to train Ukrainian pilots to fly them.
  • Ukrainian drones targeted Russian airports for a second time this week. It wasn't clear that the first incident specifically targeted airports, but that perhaps explains the reason Moscow closed its four major airports the other day.
  • Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin posted a video for the first time since his mutiny against Russian military brass (he's released audio recordings since then, but no videos). In this one, he hinted that he's in Africa - where he said his hired troops are "making life a nightmare for ISIS and al-Qaeda and other bandits." The video was also something of a recruiting ad: it included a phone number aspiring hired guns can call to join up.
Migration
  • A new Human Rights Watch report accused Saudi guards of killing hundreds of Ethiopian migrants trying to cross the border from Yemen using explosives in a "systematic pattern of attack" between March 2022 and June 2023. A Saudi government source called the charges "unfounded."
Moon Missions
  • Russia reported that its Luna-25 unmanned lunar lander crashed onto the moon's surface a few days ago, ending the mission.
  • India, on the other hand, says its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft - also unmanned - is working "perfectly" and on course to land at the moon's south pole tomorrow. It will explore craters that could contain water ice.
Other News
  • Spain won its first Women's World Cup in a 1-0 match against England, who was favored (but also not expected to make it to the final match).
