BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Ukraine

  • A donor conference in the UK resulted in total new pledges of $66 billion for Ukraine's reconstruction. That's still just a sliver of the $411 billion the World Bank thinks it will take - and that number will rise further as the war grinds longer.
  • Pres. Zelensky sent a delegation to the donor conference to propose specific projects and push donors to commit to them: "We must move from vision to agreements and from agreements to real projects."
West Bank
  • Tit-for-tat violence continued to escalate in the West Bank, with near-daily Israeli raids on Palestinian militants leading to fresh reprisal attacks in a vicious cycle.
  • In the past, the Palestinian Authority - which governs the West Bank - has been able to dissuade militants from further escalations, but this time it has largely stayed out of the fray.
China
  • Zambia struck a deal with China and other lenders to restructure $6.3 billion in loans that Zambia is struggling to carry. China is Zambia's largest lender, with $4.1 billion of that total.
  • The details of the agreement weren't disclosed, but it seems to extend Zambia's grace period to help avoid another default.
Other News
  • U.S. officials concluded that the submersible that went missing on an expedition to explore the wreck of the Titanic suffered a "catastrophic implosion" that killed all five aboard - including the CEO of the company operating the trip.
  • Speaking of bored billionaires seeking extreme thrills, Elon Musk challenged Mark Zuckerberg to a "cage match." Zuckerberg - perhaps cocky off his recent jiu jitsu competition win - seemed to agree in principle to a fight: he wrote back, "Send Me Location."
  • Following his meeting with Pres. Biden, India's PM Modi took questions from reporters - for what the NYT said was the first time in his nearly ten-year premiership. His critics thought he struggled to defend his government's human rights record.
