BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Iran
- Pres. Raisi is in New York and will speak at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) as well as the Council of Foreign Relations and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
- He'll get a warmer welcome than usual now that Iran is on slightly better terms with the U.S. - thanks to the prisoner swap both sides rushed to close ahead of UNGA.
- Pres. Zelensky addressed UNGA in person this year, and warned his audience that Russia is weaponizing food and energy "not only against our country, but against all of yours, as well." Pres. Putin is not attending UNGA this year.
- Azerbaijan launched a flash military operation in Nagorno-Karabakh, killing 27 and demanding the "dissolution" of the pro-Armenian Karabakh government it calls "illegal."
- Karabakh forces quickly agreed to Azerbaijan's demand for full disarmament and accepted Russian terms for a ceasefire - but it's a fragile ceasefire and fighting continues. They'll begin talks on a final agreement today.
- Venezuela lodged a protest against Guyana's auction of new oil blocks. Venezuela disputes the offshore areas where the recently auctioned blocks are located.
- After India rejected Canada's accusation that its agents were behind the assassination of a Sikh activist in Canada, Canada rejected India's rejection - but in a characteristically polite way: "We are not looking to provoke or escalate. We are simply laying out the facts as we understand them, and we want to work with the government of India."
