BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Gaza
- After the first day of this round of talks, negotiators in Cairo remained optimistic for a ceasefire deal but say Israel and Hamas are still far from an agreement.
- Myanmar's ruling junta announced plans to start enforcing an old law allowing young men and women to be drafted into the military.
- Analysts believe the junta may use a draft to replace ranks that have been depleted by newly-reinvigorated fighting against an alliance of rebel groups in the north.
- Ukraine said it sunk the Russian landing ship Caesar Kunikov off the coast of Crimea using Magura V5 naval drones.
- Separately, Estonian intelligence warned that Russia may double its forces along NATO borders with the creation of a new 44th Army Corps of up to 45,000 troops that could be posted near the border with Finland.
- Perhaps in response, Russia included Estonia's PM, Kaja Kallas, on a list of 170 people wanted for "desecration of historical memory" for tearing down Soviet monuments.
- Rival opponents of former PM Imran Khan reached a deal to form a coalition and shut the jailed ex-leader's party out of government - even though it won the most seats in last week's election.
- The new PM will be Shehbaz Sharif: the younger brother of powerful former PM Nawaz Sharif and himself a former PM. The generals prefer Nawaz over Shehbaz, so the choice of Shehbaz as PM was seen as a concession towards greater civilian control of government.
