BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Gaza
- Hamas and Israel agreed - via Qatari mediators again - to extend their ceasefire another two days.
- As part of the extension deal, Hamas will release 10 more hostages and Israel will release 30 more Palestinian detainees each day. [I guess Hamas did have more than 50 hostages to release: it has already released 51 and must have at least another 20 to release over the next two days.]
Niger
- Niger's junta revoked an anti-migrant smuggling law that the EU pressured the deposed civilian government into signing in 2015 as part of an effort to deter illegal migration through Agadez and Libya. [Agadez is a major transit point for migrants: the UN estimates 4,000 undocumented migrants pass through its crossing each week.]
- The junta said the law "did not take into account the interests of Niger and its citizens." Revoking it seems to serve the "interests" of a rising wave of anti-colonialism and anti-European sentiment in the Sahel, though: the junta even threatened to release smugglers imprisoned under the law so they can get back to trafficking.
- The wife of Lt. Gen. Budanov - Ukraine's spy chief - was poisoned by heavy metals "most likely...through food." She's expected to recover.
- The would-be assassin(s) may have been targeting her husband: his agency said Russian operatives have tried to kill him before.
- Virgin Atlantic is flying the first-ever transatlantic flight powered entirely by sustainable fuels today: it will run on 90% waste fats and 10% waste from corn production.
