BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Ukraine

  • Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin complained that his forces are once again being denied ammunition, and warned that Russia's whole front line could collapse if Wagner is forced to withdraw from Bakhmut because of an ammo shortage: "the situation will not be sweet for all military formations protecting Russian interests."
  • The ammo supplies Prigozhin is waiting for were authorized on February 22 but still haven't shipped. Prigozhin attributed the delay to either "ordinary bureaucracy or a betrayal:"
China
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted that there's no evidence "so far" that China plans to send weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine; however, the threat is real enough that Western leaders feel they need to lobby China against it.
  • Bloomberg pointed out that China's 5% growth target for 2023 is actually quite modest: China's economy has grown much faster than that in most recent years, and most analysts expect 2023 growth will beat that target.
DRC
  • Pres. Tshisekedi asked France's Pres. Macron to support sanctions against Rwanda as punishment for Rwanda backing M23 rebels in eastern DRC.
  • Macron was hesitant to intervene in the diplomatic dispute between DRC and Rwanda by agreeing to sanctions on Rwanda: he said he would wait to see how peace negotiations go before considering sanctions.
Azerbaijan
  • Armenian and Azerbaijani troops exchanged fire in the Lachin Corridor yesterday, and five were killed: three from Armenia and two from Azerbaijan.
Migration
  • UK PM Rishi Sunak announced plans for new legislation to prevent illegal immigrants from staying in the country (currently asylum seekers can stay until their case is heard). The new laws will be unveiled next week.
