BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Ukraine

  • The U.S. delivered over one million rounds of Iranian ammunition - seized en route to Yemen late last year - to Ukraine.
  • The U.S. also has thousands of seized Iranian assault rifles - and much more ammunition - in various storage facilities across the Middle East and is looking for ways to transfer more of it to Ukraine to replenish fast-moving stocks.
DRC
  • Moise Katumbi - a wealthy businessman and former governor of cobalt-rich Katanga province - joined DRC's 2024 presidential race. He'll run against incumbent president Tshisekedi, as well as 2018 runner-up Martin Fayulu and Nobel Peace Prize-winning doctor Denis Mukwege - and others.
Niger
  • France said it will start withdrawing its troops from Niger "this week." There are currently around 1,500 French troops in Niger and Pres. Macron has promised to have them all out by the end of the year.
Migration
  • Panamanian officials said a record 400,000 migrants - many Venezuelan, and all heading north towards the U.S. and Mexico - crossed the Darién jungle in the first nine months of 2023. That's already far more than the 250,000 recorded in all of 2022.
