BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Ukraine
- Poland's Pres. Duda said his government will transfer four MiG fighter jets to Ukraine "literally within the next few days." Several other countries have promised to send jets to Ukraine, but none have delivered on their promise yet.
- Russia threatened to destroy any jets sent to Ukraine.
- Chris Dodd, Pres. Biden's Special Advisor for the Americas, plans to travel to Panama and Honduras next week. The timing is deliberate: Dodd wants to speak with Honduras about its recent decision to switch diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China.
- Honduras is unlikely to reverse its decision as a result of Dodd's trip: China is offering Honduras help paying off its massive debts, and the U.S. probably can't match that offer. Instead, Dodd probably hopes he can limit the expansion of Chinese influence in the country.
- New Zealand said it would follow the U.S. and UK in banning TikTok from its government computers over concerns about the app sharing users' data with the Chinese government.
- Libya's eastern armed forces said they recovered the 2.5 tons of natural uranium that the International Atomic Energy Agency reported missing yesterday. The drums were found near where they went missing (close to the border with Chad) but in an area outside of government control.
- Global stock markets rose yesterday after a group of 11 U.S. banks announced a plan to pool together $30 billion in deposits for First Republic Bank, which was teetering on the brink of collapse. There's still significant pressure on the banking sector.
