BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Sudan
- Sudan's rival warring generals made another attempt at a 24-hour ceasefire, and this one seems to have held better than the first.
- The generals have not indicated they're willing to start peace talks yet.
- At least 78 people died in a stampede in Sana'a yesterday.
- The crowd had gathered to collect a handout of about $10 each to celebrate the end of Ramadan this week; Houthi police shot into the air in an effort to control the crowd but hit an electrical wire, causing an explosion that sparked the stampede.
- John Sopko, the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction, complained to Congress that U.S. government agencies haven't given his office the transparency it needs to accurately report on U.S. aid to Afghanistan. As a result, he said, it wasn't possible to determine if U.S. aid is "currently funding the Taliban."
- Benchmark Source estimated that CMOC is sitting on around 16,000 tons of cobalt hydroxide at Tenke Fungurume. That's roughly 8% of annual global production - and it could be released into the market soon, now that CMOC and DRC have come to an agreement to end their royalty dispute.
- I haven't seen cobalt prices drop in response to news of their agreement yet, but CMOC's share price spiked.
- New UN figures suggest India's population will surpass China's (including Hong Kong) by the middle of this year. The NYT pointed out that India's population is younger than that of China and most industrialized countries - almost 80% of Indians are working age (<50) - which bodes well for continued economic growth.
