BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Gaza

  • Israel and Hamas agreed to add at least one more day to their short-term ceasefire agreement just minutes before it was about to expire.
  • Hamas has now released 97 hostages, including 70 Israelis. The latest release included some hostages that were being held by a different militant group - Islamic Jihad - suggesting Hamas is more capable of coordinating with rival groups than it's letting on.
  • Israel estimates Hamas has up to 90% of the remaining 140 hostages and considers it "their [Hamas's] responsibility to find the other 10%" held by other groups. That probably overestimates both Hamas's hostage count and its ability to negotiate with other groups.
Iran
  • Bloomberg reported that Saudi Arabia offered to invest in archrival Iran in exchange for Iran's help convincing its proxies - especially Hamas - to deescalate and avoid a broader regional war. Iran hasn't responded to the offer yet.
North Korea
  • The *Democratic* People's Republic of Korea apparently held local "elections" on Sunday.
  • North Korea has an unusual approach to democracy: instead of asking voters to choose between multiple candidates, it gives them a single, pre-selected candidate and asks them to either approve or reject that person for the office they were selected for.
  • For the first time since the 1960s, official results showed some dissent - but not much: rejections totaled 0.09% and 0.13% of votes for provincial and city council candidates, respectively.
Other News
  • A Panamanian court sided with activists and protesters over Canadian mining giant First Quantum and issued a decision that will force First Quantum's giant copper mine to close. That mine produced 1% of global copper supply - and 5% of Panama's GDP - so news of its closure lifted copper prices.
