BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF
Tanzania
- Tanzania's opposition claims that security forces have been summarily executing demonstrators who dared to protest against Pres. Samia Suluhu Hassan's botched re-election, and - in some cases - secretly dumping the bodies to conceal the scale of the killings.
- Internet services are slowly returning after a six-day election blackout, and authorities seem nervous about how Tanzanians will use their newly-restored comms. The government disseminated text messages warning that sharing concerning images and videos - such as of victims of the violent crackdown - could cause panic and even lead to "treason charges."
Mexico
- Mexico's Pres. Sheinbaum dispelled rumors that the U.S. is planning a manned military mission to target drug cartels inside Mexico: "That's not going to happen."
- Sheinbaum has repeatedly rejected U.S. offers to send troops to Mexico to help confront cartels, and maintains that such a mission would violate Mexico's sovereignty. Instead, she's stepped up Mexico's domestic efforts against cartels - but perhaps not enough to satisfy U.S. hawks.
- The brazen public assassination of Mexico's most vocal anti-cartel mayor on Saturday was a sign that Mexico's efforts haven't forced the cartels onto the back foot.
Gaza
- Hamas returned the remains of another hostage, U.S.-Israeli dual citizen Itay Chen, who was killed in the Oct. 7 attacks. Chen was one of 12 U.S. citizens that Hamas abducted on Oct. 7, and the last of the 12 to be returned.
- That leaves seven more deceased hostages in Gaza; Hamas maintains that it's doing its best to locate and return their remains quickly.
Trade
- Beginning today, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider the legality of Pres. Trump's use of emergency authorities to impose sweeping tariffs on trading partners.
- While some legal experts see the case as a test of presidential power, even an adverse decision wouldn't immediately reverse tariffs - it would only force the administration to rely on another basis for imposing them.
