BLACKWATER USA | DAILY BRIEF

Ukraine / Russia

  • Ukraine assassinated one of its own former lawmakers, Illya Kyva, outside of Moscow. Kyva openly supported Russia's invasion and defected to Russia just before it began; he was subsequently convicted of high treason in absentia.
  • Russia confirmed Kyva's death and said it would open an investigation.
Venezuela / Guyana
  • A Guyanese military helicopter crashed near the border with Venezuela with seven aboard - including five senior military officers.
  • Tensions are high at the border because Venezuela appears to be preparing to try to annex the part of Guyana it claims as its own, so cautious Guyanese officials were quick and clear to say the helicopter faced bad weather and there was no indication of enemy fire in the area.
  • Guyana's Pres. Ali spoke with SecState Blinken yesterday and was assured he has the U.S.'s "unwavering support for Guyana’s sovereignty."
Gaza
  • The Israeli military released an undated photo showing 11 Hamas military leaders at what looks like a working lunch in a tunnel, with English annotations identifying five that Israel says have been "eliminated."
  • PM Netanyahu said Israeli forces have surrounded the Khan Yunis home of Hamas's top leader, Yahya Sinwar: "His home is not his castle, and he can flee, but it is only a matter of time until we find him" (he's probably in a tunnel or bunker somewhere in Gaza and not in his home).
Yemen
  • The U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Mason shot down another Houthi drone yesterday. The drone was heading towards the Mason but wasn't necessarily targeting it.
  • In addition, U.S. officials walked back initial assessments that last week's Houthi drones and ballistic missiles were targeting U.S. warships in the Red Sea (including the Mason), saying they were likely targeting other vessels instead - and not trying to provoke U.S. retaliation.
Other News
  • UK PM Sunak said his government would override a ruling by its top court and seek to reinstate a controversial plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda - even if they're not Rwandan.
  • The plan is controversial on both sides: the Supreme Court agreed with opposition lawmakers that Rwanda is an unsafe place to send asylum-seekers and sending them there would violate UK and international law, while hard-liners had hoped for more aggressive measures to tackle illegal immigration.
